and personal client attention.
Reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome is a painful and complex disorder of
the sympathetic nervous system. Some of the symptoms of the disease
include continued pain after the injury has healed; progressive burning
pain that is more severe than what would be normal to the particular
injury; swelling; discoloration of the skin; pain that does not lessen
with regular pain medication; a feeling of coldness in the affected area
and severe pain caused from a light touch. Although the precise causes of
RSD are unknown, it often occurs following an injury, is usually found in
the extremities, and is believed to be caused by some type of trauma to
the nervous system such as a crush injury, hand or foot surgery, or
extended nerve compression. Anyone can be affected by RSD, including
children, but it is most common in women over 50 years of age.
Although the disease most often affects the hand or foot, it may also
involve the knee, hip, shoulder, or other sites. It is not a fatal disease
and often goes away with time, though it may take several years to run its
course. & Associatesnbsp;According to the McGill Pain Index, the pain associated
with RSD ranks among the highest degrees of pain a patient endures. Out of
a possible score of 50 (50 being the most severe pain), RSD scores 40
points compared to childbirth at a score of 32, cancer at a score of 25
points and fractures at a score of 18 points.
There are associated problems as well, which include a spreading of the
pain to other parts of the body; depression, and problems sleeping. If the
disease is to be successfully managed, early diagnosis and proper
treatment are important. However, RSD is difficult to diagnose, because
there is no way to test for it.& Associatesnbsp; Generally, a medical history review and
exam will lead to an RSD finding.& Associatesnbsp; If left untreated, RSD may spread to
other areas of the body and lead to total disability.
While it is not considered medical negligence to develop RSD following
injury, surgery, or other medical treatment,& Associatesnbsp; failure to timely diagnosis
RSD (within a three-month period), failure to refer to a neurologist or a
pain clinic, or failure to properly treat the condition may in certain
instances constitute medical negligence.
If you or a loved one is suffering from RSD as a result of an injury from
an accident or an improperly performed medical procedure, call the law
offices of Hardison & Associates , for we understand the disease and can
accurately represent you in court.& Associatesnbsp;
While financial restitution cannot compensate for the pain and suffering
of RSD, victims can benefit from the knowledge that those who harmed
others must pay for their actions. & Associatesnbsp; Please call Hardison & Associates ,
